I’m Ashley Kim, PhD, a biologist and science policy professional with a passion for understanding how complex behaviors emerge in the natural world and how research can inform better decision-making. I earned my doctorate in Biological Sciences from UC San Diego, where my work in the Nieh Lab explored honey bee circadian rhythms and communication signals. My research combined field biology with machine learning to decode behavioral patterns.
Currently, I work with OpenAI as a consultant, designing and implementing rigorous evaluation tasks to improve the safety, reliability, and domain expertise of large language models. I also bring my biology background to AI safety and biosecurity, serving as an AI red-teamer to identify and mitigate dual-use risks in frontier AI systems. For outreach, I’m a former National Park Service principal investigator, with experience leading interdisciplinary projects, managing federal grants, and collaborating with policymakers.
